⟡ What I did on summer vacation ⟡
This summer I am happy to report that I did a few things I’ve never done before. If you have lived well, it gets harder as you get older to do something for the first time. To wit, whilst I was in Chicago this summer, I went to my first drag show.
What took me so long? I have no idea.
It was a mother-daughter bonding experience. When emcee Ginger Grant asked, “Who’s here for their first drag show?” DD and I raised our hands proudly. Now, we are drag show virgins no more.
For those of you who don’t know, the custom is to offer dollar bills to the performers if you are digging their act. I know, a dollar seems like so little these days, but hey its tradition.
Being age free has its privileges. Whilst a nervous group of corporate types on a convention break squirmed in their seats, I stood up and danced with a performer, slipped a bill down an adorable man’s pants, and another into a lovely’s bra. I think the performers got my joy, because one drag queen offered me a hug, which I gladly accepted.
A drag show is an experience in suspending all understanding of gender, sexuality and laws of attraction. Lines blur. It’s a man, it’s a woman, it’s a man, it’s a woman. Who cares? A joyous, gender free spritz of sexuality, humor, flirtation. I left The Baton Club exhilarated. It was a celebration of the zhuzh of life.
I will continue to seek out more firsts and report back. The next one is not so spicy. I was invited to step out on a golf course for the first time in my life.
Now that’s scary.
*Zie is a gender neutral pronoun.
