Kick this word to the curb

just

⟡ Try it and see what it does for you ⟡

And whilst we’re on the subject of words… Women and the Internet are abuzz about the word “just.”   Thank you to ladybuginred, a Camp Liza reader, who commented in my last post, I’ve banished these four words on how she banished the word “just” from her vocabulary. Studies have shown that girls and women use “just” much of the time and the fact that it demeans them, belittles them, makes them apologetic and strips them of respect and power.  It minimizes your thoughts and presence.

Example.

Woman knocks on the door.

“Who is it?”

“Just Liza.”

Why am I “just” Liza? Am I trying to be less somehow?  Why?  Would Queen Bey say, “Just Beyonce.”  I don’t think so.

vs.

Man knocks on the door.

“Who is it?”

“John.”  Can you imagine him saying, “Just John.”  No, I don’t think so.

I just think vs. I think

I just need to talk to you vs. I need to talk to you

I just want a raise vs. I want a raise

If you need more clarity and empowerment read these excellent, short articles:  The One Word that Undermines Women at Work  and  One Word That Can Damage Your Credibility.

Just.  Four tiny letters that can change your life.  Not using “just” changes your message, your voice, posture and presence.

Go forth and be brilliant my friends!

P.S.  I’m just starting to eliminate saying just, so if I use it, call me on it!
